F1 Miami GP qualifying

Live Commentary

By: Jake Boxall-Legge

Antonelli: "This weekend is going well so far! A bit disappointing this morning, but it's good to bounce back. I didn't have a clean run like I did yesterday, and I got a bit greedy in Turn 1. But the gaps are super tight, and if you can gain just a few hundredths you can make up so many positions."

Norris: "Congrats to Max, especially being a dad now! I hoped it would slow him down a bit but it hasn't. Max did a Max lap, but I'm happy. I locked up into Turn 17, but it's all shoulda-coulda-woulda-stuff. I've not put it together, but it is what it is, and looking forward to what I can do in Turn 1."

Verstappen: "It's been a great qualifying, we improved the car a tiny amount so it allowed me to rotate a bit better. I had a tiny moment into Turn 1 so I lost a bit of time, but it worked out well. You can back out of it, but it's qualifying - you try to correct it and floor it out of the corner."

Q3 order

1. Verstappen
2. Norris
3. Antonelli
4. Piastri
5. Russell
6. Sainz
7. Albon
8. Leclerc
9. Ocon
10. Tsunoda

Max Verstappen on pole for the F1 Miami GP

Piastri does the final sector of his life, but he's still only third fastest. Sainz goes fourth over Albon, but Antonelli comes around to split the McLarens - just 0.002s behind Norris!

That cements pole for Verstappen, who puts in a great lap - replays show Norris took too much kerb into Turn 17 to lose time.

Verstappen has a slight moment in the opening sector but he's still 0.022s up in the first sector. He's found more time in the second sector - and does a 1m26.204s. Norris does a purple middle sector, but misses out on pole by just 0.065s!

Q3 order with two minutes remaining

1. Verstappen, 2. Norris, 3. Piastri, 4. Antonelli, 5. Albon, 6. Russell, 7. Sainz, 8. Ocon, 9. Tsunoda, 10. Leclerc.

Piastri also lost a bit of time in the second sector, with a wiggle and a bounce through the kerbs as he got slightly airborne.

Albon's fifth after a lap on used tyres, so the Williams driver looks like he's in the shop window for a decent lap if he can press a set of new softs into action.

Antonelli goes fourth fastest, 0.24s off Verstappen's opening gambit. Russell locked up at Turn 17, as did Norris - which suggests there's more time in that McLaren.

Ocon's set a 1m27.407s, while Tsunoda loses time in the middle sector to fall behind.

Verstappen does a 1m26.492s, as Piastri is slightly short of the Red Bull driver. Norris crosses the line - and he's 0.003s shy of Verstappen's lap too!

Q3 begins - who will get pole?

The McLarens are a good bet here, after the first two sessions. Verstappen's looking handy in the high-speed stuff in the opening sector as the Red Bull has good grip here, but he's struggling on the straights. The Mercs could also be a factor here...

Lawson was heard to complain about his battery, with his engineer telling him that he was managing an issue. Presumably it was struggling to discharge, limiting what he could do with his ERS deployment.

Q3 competitors in Q2 order

1. Piastri
2. Norris
3. Russell
4. Antonelli
5. Verstappen
6. Sainz
7. Albon
8. Leclerc
9. Tsunoda
10. Ocon

Eliminated in Q2

11. Hadjar
12. Hamilton
13. Bortoleto
14. Doohan
15. Lawson

Hamilton hasn't improved after a lock-up at Turn 17 so it looks like the Ferrari driver is out of the reckoning here. Doohan can't improve positions, and nor can Lawson; they're out in Q2!

Russell pushes Hadjar out, as he finds his way up to third.

Ocon finds a better middle sector after a difficult opening split, and he's up to ninth place. Hadjar goes 10th, but that keeps him on the bubble as Hamilton and Russell are the big hitters looking to get into Q3.

The second runs begin, and everyone's going out at the same time - pretty much on the dot of five minutes remaining. And so, we get another queue to leave the pitlane...

"Get me out early; just no confidence in the car. Sliding everywhere, no grip," Russell says. He's really not happy with his car, while Antonelli's hitting the high notes in that Mercedes.

Elimination zone after first Q2 runs

11. Russell, 12. Ocon, 13. Doohan, 14. Lawson, 15. Hadjar.

Bortoleto's in 10th as it stands, following the opening set of runs - just 0.009s ahead of Russell. The Sauber driver is finding some form here!

Antonelli then gets among the cut and thrust of the front-guard action, splitting Norris and Verstappen to grab third. Russell only goes 11th fastest, albeit on used tyres.

"No grip, no idea what's going on," Russell says.

Sainz moves ahead of the Ferrari duo now by 0.04s, a good effort from the Williams driver to get within 0.3s of Verstappen. Albon goes even quicker, finding half a tenth on his team-mate.

The McLarens then swarm to the top; Piastri does a 1m26.269s, and Norris is 0.23s behind his team-mate.

Verstappen set a 1m26.643s to go fastest, half a second clear of Tsunoda. Leclerc collects a slipstream from a Mercedes to split the two Red Bulls as it stands.

I pity those poor suckers in the Q1 pitlane queue. Gas, brake, honk. Gas, brake, honk. Honk, honk, punch.

Even F1 drivers aren't above the commute in rush hour...

Q2 begins!

The second stage is open, where we'll decide P11-15 on tomorrow's grid. The Red Bulls, Bortoleto, Leclerc, and Ocon are out first.

Gasly reckoned "traffic from a Ferrari" contributed to his Q1 exit, as the Frenchman will line up 18th tomorrow. Alpine was struggling for pace enough this weekend, and this won't help the French squad.

Good lap from Doohan to outqualify Gasly, as the Australian scarcely looked anywhere near falling out at the first hurdle. Bortoleto was 11th in that session to put a qualifying head-to-head tally mark alongside his name versus Hulkenberg.

Eliminated in Q1

16. Hulkenberg
17. Alonso
18. Gasly
19. Stroll
20. Bearman

Tsunoda's on the bubble, as Hamilton breaks out of the bottom five  - but the Japanese driver improves to push Hulkenberg into the drop zone.

Hadjar climbs to sixth, before Norris shuffles up to second place.

Meanwhile, Ocon escapes the drop zone!

Russell moves up to third, which should secure his passage into Q2. Bearman only goes 19th, so he's out of the reckoning. Leclerc improves to ninth, but he's still short of Bortoleto's lap. Great effort from the Sauber driver on his previous run.

Elimination zone with two minutes remaining

16. Ocon, 17. Alonso, 18. Gasly, 19. Stroll, 20. Bearman.

More pitlane kerfuffling - Bortoleto needs a pull-back to properly get out of the garage to delay Hulkenberg slightly. Verstappen's the only one who hasn't taken to the track for a final run.

Leclerc and Tsunoda only get up to ninth and 10th, with Hamilton only 15th after those laps following a Turn 17 lock-up. This is a bizarre order, although Verstappen's about to go to top - and does so with a 1m26.870s. Piastri slots into second with a 1m27.006s.

Bortoleto's up to fifth, dropping just under Albon - as Russell and Hulkenberg split the two Racing Bulls drivers as Lawson had just got ahead of Hadjar for what is now sixth.

Sainz moves up to P1 with a 1m27.098s, but Antonelli then sets a 1m27.077s to leapfrog the Spaniard at the top of the pile.

Albon will be investigated after the session for pushing in front of Hadjar in the queue. The Frenchman now does a lap to set his first time of Q1 - and he immediately hits second with the fresh soft tyres.

Mercedes didn't much fancy setting a lap on the used softs, so both Russell and Antonelli retreated to the garage. Antonelli gets a quick service and collects fresh rubber for another attempt, as does Russell.

Tsunoda didn't seem too happy on his tyres, and is currently only 15th. Neither Racing Bulls driver has set a time either.

Verstappen does a 1m27.573s to go quickest, but Piastri posts a 1m27.307s to move to the top. Norris was fastest in the middle sector, but he's only up to third so far. Antonelli aborts his lap after going slightly deep at Turn 17.

Bortoleto opens with a 1m28.674s, but Hulkenberg goes 0.3s quicker. Gasly's first lap is not good enough to surpass either Sauber. Alonso then gets a 1m28.058s with his repaired Aston Martin, but Albon collects a 1m27.838s to sit atop the order so far...
