Live Commentary

By: Jake Boxall-Legge

As the champagne is uncorked, and Monaco's brass band plays Carmen's Bizet, we'll depart and say thank you for joining us!

And we get to do this all again next week, with Barcelona coming up next week. We'll see you then!

Norris collects his trophy and his FIA winner's medal - from Princess Charlene, not from Mohammed Ben Sulayem, interestingly.

Zak Brown collects the constructors' trophy, having decided to stick around in Monaco rather than check out McLaren's fortunes at the Indy 500.

Norris, Piastri, and Leclerc discuss the highlights of the race - feels like years ago that Norris locked up into the first corner and saved his McLaren from the wall.

Can't wait to give everyone a five/10 in tomorrow's driver ratings (that's a joke, there might be a four somewhere...)

Williams managed to dig its way into a double-points finish in response to the Racing Bulls strategy - Sainz and Albon playing games with the cars behind to ensure the team could score with both cars.

Racing Bulls must be commended for its stretch-and-save strategy - Lawson backing off ensured Hadjar could grab sixth today. Williams following suit did let Lawson recover to eighth.

F1 Monaco GP Top 10

1. Norris
2. Leclerc
3. Piastri
4. Verstappen
5. Hamilton
6. Hadjar
7. Ocon
8. Lawson
9. Albon
10. Sainz

"Monaco baby, yeah baby!" Norris exclaims over the radio. A great run from him, executed well. But the same must be said of Leclerc, who did everything he could to make a second home win a reality.

Lando Norris wins the Monaco Grand Prix

It's been a tense few laps, but Norris crosses the line to win in Monaco - and does a 1m13.221s to set the fastest lap of the race!

Leclerc finishes three seconds down at the flag, ahead of Piastri, as Verstappen indeed finishes fourth ahead of Hamilton,

Lap 78

Verstappen pits, so Norris begins the final lap in the lead. The Briton immediately picks up the pace, getting him over a second ahead of Leclerc.

Indeed, Verstappen is fourth, well clear of Hamilton.

Lap 77

Penultimate lap. Verstappen will have to pit at the end of this one - which frees up Norris.

Lap 76

Red Bull is bringing Tsunoda in, so that's his slim hopes of a points-scoring result over.

Hamilton is 45s behind this pack, so Verstappen will come out in fourth when he stops.

Lap 75

Antonelli does his second stop, so it's just Tsunoda yet to do a second stop - along with Verstappen.

Leclerc is remaining on Norris' tail through the chicane, but Norris' exits are keeping him in the game so far as he tries to back Leclerc up - and then pull the pin when Verstappen pits.

Lap 73

Leclerc points out that Norris is making "mistakes" ahead of him - but Norris is very much hoping that Piastri can start to put the Ferrari driver under some scrutiny.

Lap 72

This is what we saw in the differences between Norris and Leclerc's laps yesterday - Leclerc carries so much more speed into the corner, but the McLaren's traction is incredible. Piastri's on the back of the pair now.

Lap 71

Piastri's catching Norris and Leclerc now, as Verstappen is continuing to compress the field. Antonelli comes in to do his first stop of the afternoon - better late than never!

Lap 70

"Max is just backing off, he's not even pushing," Norris complains.

Meanwhile, Russell's stopping again, leaving just Antonelli needing to do two stops and Tsunoda to do his final stop.

Lap 69

10 to go, and Verstappen's just 1.4s ahead of Norris. For those just joining us, he's got to stop again.

Norris asks for Piastri to speed up to put some pressure on Leclerc.

Lap 68

Norris is homing back on Verstappen now, as the Dutchman feels his left-hand tyres are "dead". Red Bull can afford to hang this out, but he's struggling.

Lap 66

Sainz moves over, so Albon reclaims ninth and Sainz is up to 10th. Just the 42s behind Lawson, who's on for his first points of the year.

Lap 65

Nothing ventured, nothing gained - but yes, this midfield hold-up play has hurt those who tried to pit early. Bearman, Colapinto, and the Saubers have not really made any progress, as they've come out the wrong side of the train.

Lap 64

Sainz reassures his team that Albon will be given ninth before the end of the race, although currently the team can't do the switch as Russell's well behind. The Briton is going to box as Antonelli has built him a gap - he's back out in 11th.

Lap 62

Norris is trying to stay out of Verstappen's wake, just to avoid any deleterious effects on his powertrain. Leclerc is sticking with him for the time being.

Lap 60

Verstappen is continuing to circulate at the front, happy to hang on and see if someone comes into strife late on. Piastri's catching them.

Hamilton's too far behind so if Verstappen pits, the Red Bull will come out in fourth unless the Briton does some magic laps.

Lap 59

For all of our pre-race strategy predictions, the early stop hasn't been the play here - the Racing Bulls strategy of stretching stops has put paid to that. Tsunoda and Stroll need to stop again, but there's likely little to play for unless something else happens.

Lap 58

Verstappen's going to back Norris up into Leclerc here, as the Red Bull driver is still hanging it out for a VSC.

20 laps to go - it's Verstappen (still needing to stop again), Norris, Leclerc, Piastri, Hamilton, Hadjar, Ocon, Lawson, Sainz, and Russell (needs two stops) as our top 10.

Lap 56

Hamilton comes to do his second stop. Williams' hold-up play has got Sainz back out in ninth, helped by Russell's penalty, but the Mercedes driver will have to do two actual stops at the end. Antonelli needs another two stops, as Tsunoda and Stroll also need to pit.

Lap 55

Verstappen is 2.5s clear of Norris, and yet to do his second stop. Leclerc is staying close to the Briton, as he wants a sniff of a second consecutive home win.

Lap 54

"I prefer not to speak," Russell says of his penalty. Proper Mourinho moment, as the stewards seemed aware of his plan.

Sainz makes his stop, as Russell now comes in to do his DTP.

Lap 53

Antonelli did very nearly crash out behind Albon and got very close at the chicane. He gave the place back, presumably after hearing about Russell's penalty.

Lap 52

I've always wondered if a driver would ever do a corner-cut overtake and just cop the penalty, seeing as there's clear and defined penalties.

As it happens, Russell gets a drive-through penalty. There's a phrase for this...

Lap 51

Verstappen's come up to the traffic now - Norris will catch it again in a bit.

"I think he's going to take the penalty," Albon says, as Russell's no closer to returning the position. "I think intentional corner-cutting is worse."

Russell does indeed says "I'll take the penalty, he's driving erratically".

Lap 50

Russell has skipped the chicane and got past Albon - I wonder if he's decided to just cop a penalty and press on regardless.

Norris pits, and comes out well ahead of Leclerc.

Lap 49

Leclerc avoids getting involved with the traffic and pits. He had to respond to Piastri's stop, but the Australian's well behind.

Norris will presumably come in soon.

Lap 48

Russell's unhappy with Alex Albon's defensive work. Norris is going to cut through this pack.

Piastri pits, and gets a much quicker stop than his first and gets out ahead of Hamilton. Verstappen is given the command to push.

Lap 47

Norris is approaching the backmarker pack now, so he's going to have to lap this ragtag bunch for a second time. Now might be a good chance for someone at the front to do a second stop to make up the time.

Lap 45

Norris is up to 6s ahead of Leclerc now.

Mercedes is now holding out for a safety car; neither Russell nor Antonelli have made stops. Hulkenberg's about to call it quits on his tyres and makes his final stop of the afternoon.

Lap 44

This is hold-up play that Emile Heskey would be proud of. Williams playing the team game here. Liam Lawson asks why Williams is doing the switch, as he's baffled by the chaos.

Lap 43

Norris has rebuilt his lead up to 5.5s, after losing time earlier. Williams switches places with both drivers, and Albon's going to hold station and let Sainz do his stops free of charge.

Piastri had a slide at Ste Devote, and has a little kiss of the barrier.

Lap 41

Lawson and Albon stop again, and seem to have cemented eighth and ninth. Racing Bulls took some flak for strategies earlier this year, but the team has played a blinder here.

Lap 40

Leclerc's cut the gap to four seconds now, so he's finding pace before presumably making stop two. Norris has had quite a slow lap, in the 1m15s versus Leclerc's 1m14s.
