F1 Spanish GP live commentary and updates - FP2

Updates from the Spanish Grand Prix's second Formula 1 practice session

Live Commentary

By: Jake Boxall-Legge

That's all from us on the Live decks tonight - but we'll keep things rolling on our websites with news from free practice and more!

Thanks for joining us, and we'll see you tomorrow for FP3 and qualifying at Barcelona.

Watch: From Wheelchair to Race Car: Robert Wickens takes on the World’s Toughest Street Circuit

Antonelli, Alonso, Gasly, Hadjar, and Lawson complete the top 10. Hamilton was 0.04s shy of Lawson, as Ferrari struggled to get a consistent tune out of the softer rubber.

FP2 complete - Piastri top of the pops

Oscar Piastri's 1m12.760s on softs came at the end of the shorter runs, beating the 1m13.046s benchmark from Russell earlier on.

Verstappen, Norris, and Leclerc complete the top five order.

Norris is showing up well on his medium-tyre stint, as he sets a couple of laps in the 1m18s.

Verstappen's current runs on the soft aren't quite in the same ballpark, so it remains to be seen if the costs are considered a reasonable race tyre.

Verstappen has not long flashed past stuck under Leclerc's gearbox. "Haha, oh man," he says. "Not very clever," Lambiase adds, both enervated by the Ferrari driver.

"We have nothing to learn by staying out", Leclerc says - he's now gone out on the soft. Russell's finding it okay so far, with 15 laps on this current stint on softs - a tyre that's had 18 laps done on it so far.

Temperatures have started to fall as we get towards the business end of the session - air temp has fallen to 29.6C, but track temp is now 43.8C.

Verstappen's pitted and going to start a longer run on softs to conclude the session. McLaren continues to pound around on mediums.

We've got both McLarens on laptimes in the high 1m20.2s, low 1m20.3s, as Verstappen is a couple of tenths behind in the high 1m20.4s - both on mediums. Mercedes is a further couple of tenths behind, circulating on the softs.

"Alonso clearly pushing the Aston Martin as hard as it will go. Which isn’t very far. He’s on and off the throttle all through the corner in a bid to get it to do anything other than understeer."

"Anyhow, the properly quick cars (ie McLaren, Ferrari, Merc) swooping smoothly through this corner as if they’ve hooked a grappling line on the apex."

It looks like we've hit the end of the hot-lappery, and now we're progressing into long-run territory - unless you're Ollie Bearman, who's back on track after needing repairs following his earlier spin. The Haas driver has some fresh softs to play with.

Hadjar and Lawson break into that top 10, going ninth and 10th respectively.

Hamilton reports that his Ferrari is "not driveable", which is a shame, given that's the minimum one expects from a car.

Top 10 after 30 minutes

We've passed the opening half of the session, and here's the order so far: 1. Piastri, 2. Russell, 3. Verstappen, 4. Norris, 5. Leclerc, 6. Antonelli, 7. Alonso, 8. Gasly, 9. Hamilton, 10. Hulkenberg.

Alonso and Gasly improve, going up to P5 and P6 respectively before Leclerc posts a 1m13.260s to go fourth.

Piastri then shatters the deadlock at the top to post a 1m12.760s on his first lap with the softs in this session.

"This sliding I have is not normal, mate. It's crazy," Tsunoda reports.

"Same feeling as FP1, both axles?" asks his engineer Richard Wood, who gets the affirmative. "Yeah literally, just sliding around, no grip."

He's P6, 0.637s off Russell's time.

Verstappen posts a 1m13.070s to go second on softs; Norris then sets a...1m13.070s! Neither driver can beat Russell's current benchmark on their first runs of the session on the softs.

Antonelli goes up to second with a 1m13.298s, but Norris has set a strong first sector. We'll keep an eye on this lap...

Leclerc improves to a 1m14.103s on mediums, but Russell's going a lot faster on softs - purple middle sector, purple final sector, and it's a 1m13.046s.

Elsewhere, no further action in the Colapinto/Hamilton moment earlier.

An impeding incident between Colapinto and Hamilton has been noted.

In the meantime, Russell puts on the softs for his first bit of time with them this weekend - C3s this weekend. Antonelli does the same.

"It's so bad!" Stroll says on the radio. Engineer Gary Gannon probes for specifics, which the Canadian...well, probably delivers. I don't know. "I mean, just...look, you know?" comes his riposte.

"I see," Gannon replies, having presumably spotted the culprit in the data.

Radio ga-ga at Aston Martin, as Alonso earlier admonished Hamilton as "our hero of the day" as he got stuck behind the Ferrari driver.

Codders goes trackside

"Leclerc just overdid the braking into T10, no smoke but a loud tortured-pigeon squeal and a wrestle with the steering to avoid understeering over the outside kerb…

"Tsunoda carried too much speed through the entry and it tried to swap ends on him at the apex.

"Snappers having their work cut out here to compose artful images. The Paddock Club flatbed trucks of doom are all parked inside T11-12, along with two vans and a portaloo."

Russell now gets to the top of the order, doing a 1m13.501s to go 0.135s clear of Norris' earlier time.

"Man it's a joke, the traffic," Hadjar rues over the radio. He didn't mind it last week, as Lawson's logjam at Monaco rather helped him secure a strong top-six result.

Ocon sits at the base of the times as it stands, as he's getting his eye in after missing FP2. His team-mate Ollie Bearman has a moment out of Turn 3, as the replay shows him washing out at the exit of the corner and ended up in a spin.

Kept it out of the wall though, not too shabby...

Verstappen splits the McLarens with a 1m13.910s, with a purple third sector.

Everyone's set a reasonably representative time now; Norris, Verstappen, Piastri, Alonso, Russell, and Leclerc are the current top six.

Alonso's first lap on mediums is a 1m14.256s, but Lando Norris immediately steps it up with a 1m13.636s - quicker than his FP1 time off the bat.

Piastri is 0.351s off his team-mate on his opening tour.

Leclerc kicks us off with a 1m14.367s on the medium tyre, followed by Ocon on a slightly slower sighter lap. Antonelli moves up to second, 0.151s off the Ferrari driver.

FP2 begins at Barcelona

We hear a couple of cars start to run down the pitlane - and Leclerc, Ocon, and Antonelli are out first to conduct their running, all three on medium tyres. Colapinto is the first one on the hards.

Weather and temperatures

Just a couple of minutes until we get going once again for the second hour of F1 practice here at Barcelona. It's still hot - 30.6C ambient, 47.6C track.

The beach does actually sound pretty good.

Briatore would "prefer staying on the beach" if he didn't believe Alpine could be competitive

The ever-controversial Flavio Briatore took part in his first F1 press conference for...I don't know how many years, I was probably still in school by then.

Enigmatic return to the press conference room? Just a bit, but he was at least forthright in his plans to bring Alpine back into competitive shape.

"If I believe in 2027 that we don't compete, I prefer staying on the beach and drinking Coca-Cola and not come here with this warm weather in Barcelona and sweating."

Vowles on Martins' first FP1 with Williams

James Vowles applauded Victor Martins' efforts, as the Frenchman made his first appearance for Williams in FP1. Martins was formerly part of Alpine's academy, before being picked up by Williams after leaving the Enstone team.

"He did a good job. He was six tenths off Carlos; about a tenth, a tenth and a half of that, was in Turn 9 and the last corner.

"He's being careful with the car, and I like that about what he did. So to be four and a half tenths off in your first outing with us is good."

FP1 recap

Lando Norris headlined the earlier practice session at Barcelona, setting a 1m13.718s as Max Verstappen posted a time good enough for second, but 0.367s off.

The two Ferraris were third and fourth, ahead of Oscar Piastri.

Esteban Ocon and Alex Albon did not participate in FP1, as Ryo Hirakawa and Victor Martins took their places.
